Introduction

With the launching of this website, the Board of Governors of the IEEE Aerospace & Electronic Systems Society (AESS) announces a significant new video education initiative for the aerospace and electronic systems technical community. This education initiative will initially focus on three categories of educational instruction:

  • Tutorials
  • Courses
  • Student Lecture Series

The enabling tools of this technical initiative are the present maturity and low-cost of user-friendly software which can screen-capture Microsoft PowerPoint presentations and simultaneously record first-rate video and audio of the speaker. The software product we will be using for this integration is Camtasia Studio 4.0 developed by TechSmith. The second enabling tool is the development of very low-cost, high-resolution web camera technology, which integrates seamlessly to Camtasia. We have also found that several camcorders (among them, 3 manufactured by Sony) stream video and audio seamlessly to Camtasia. When these two products are connected and installed in a Microsoft Windows PC with a 2.3GHz processor and 1Gb of RAM, the results are superb and very inexpensive to produce in a timely manner.

The tentative Tutorial/Course/Lecture Series Pricing Matrix is as follows:

  Members Non-Members Student Members
Student Lectures $15 $25 $0
Tutorials $100 $150 $50
Courses $600 $800 $10

(Note: Tutorials from the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Open Webpage will be made available at no cost. [URL: tbd])

The Board of Governors has invested the required capital to purchase the required video recording equipment and computers (both servers and development systems). This education webpage, its derivative pages, and the recorded educational material presently operate on the AESS Education server, which is located at the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH.
